Many patients with low risk prostate cancer can choose to avoid treatment altogether. The Active Surveillance Program available through the Urologic Oncology Program at the St. Joseph Hosptial Center for Cancer Prevention and Treatment involves the close observation and regular follow-up visits with one of our urologists. Any growth of prostate cancer will be detected at the earliest of stages.
The goal of the Active Surveillance Program is to avoid treatment completely, or at least to avoid treatment (and more importantly, the side effects of treatment) for as many years as possible.
If treatment of your prostate cancer becomes necessary, our group utilizes the most up to date and minimally invasive techniques (including robotic / da Vinci prostate surgery and cryoablation) to help ensure successful outcomes while minimizing the impact on urinary and sexual function.
