Renal Cryoablation for Renal Tumors

Dr. Tertzakian, a Cryocare International Centers of Excellence (ICE) Physician, and AUOC are one of the first urology groups in Southern California to offer this treatment.

Experience matters and we are proud to have one of the longest and largest series in renal cryoablation in Southern California.

Please make a consultation to see if you are a candidate for this minimally invasive treatment.

Dr. Williams of Associated Urologists of Orange County in July 2011 published results in over 15,000 patients with renal cancer demonstrating equivalent cancer specific and overall survival outcomes between thermal ablation and partial or radical nephrectomy.

Renal cryoablation is a well-established, minimally invasive treatment option for selected patients with small renal masses measuring up to 3 cm. This technique involves the use of a cryoprobe (freezing probe) to destroy/ablate the diseased portion of the kidney with lethally cold temperatures. The targeted diseased renal tissue is rapidly frozen in place including a small margin of surrounding healthy renal tissue. Most of the uninvolved functioning renal tissue is preserved. The cryoablation process causes the frozen tissue cells to rupture and die. This “dead” tissue is then allowed to slough off over time. The basic process of cryosurgery includes rapid freezing, slow thawing, and a repetition of the freeze-thaw cycle.

A primary advantage of renal cryoablation is that it is performed by laparoscopy or percutaneously with a minimally invasive approach without the need for a conventional open surgical incision. The advantages of this approach include maximal sparing of normal renal tissue, less postoperative pain, a shorter hospital stay and a quicker recovery time. The average operative time for a laparoscopic renal cryoablation is about 1½ hours with a hospital stay of 1-3 days. The usual recovery time is about two weeks.

Results from laparoscopic renal cryoablation are comparable to those achieved with more invasive surgical procedures. Good patient selection, surgical experience and close follow-up are critical in securing a good clinical outcome.
