Patient instructions for prostate ultrasound and biopsy
Please follow these instructions for your safety and comfort.

ONE WEEK BEFORE TEST
  • Stop taking Aspirin, Motrin, Aleve, Coumadin, Lovenox, Plavix, Pradaxa or any other type of blood thinning medication to prevent bleeding after the biopsy.

DAY BEFORE TEST
  • Have only liquids in the evening.
  • Take the first antibiotic pill (usually Levaquin or Cipro)

DAY OF TEST
  • Have only liquids for breakfast.
  • Take another antibiotic pill.
  • Give yourself a Fleets enema several hours before your appointment.  This is  available without a prescription at the pharmacy.

AFTER THE TEST
  • Have someone drive you home.
  • Take it easy for the rest of the day. Do not exercise, jog or get in a hot bath or Jacuzzi. You can shower. Avoid sex for two days.
  • Take the antibiotic pills given to you as instructed.  Finish the entire prescription.
  • Drink large amounts of liquids for 2-3 days after the test. It is not unusual to have some blood in the urine, semen and stools that clears within days after the test.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if problems such as fever, chills, difficult urination or heavy blood in the urine develop.

The biopsy results take 5 - 10 working days to become available. If your biopsy is on a Friday, the results are rarely available by the end of the week following your biopsy.  You will be given a follow-up appointment to discuss the biopsy results with your doctor (usually about two weeks after the biopsy).
